Lyrics

The Deal is About to Go Down

Seven mountains standing tall
Atop the highest one of all
A tower stands with silver walls
That seem to point to heaven
A golden lion guards the gates
Where fools like you and I must wait
The fortuneteller plays it straight
But every card’s a seven

A crowd has gathered, still as death
The setting sun just holds his breath
A mystery star high in the west
The moon is full of promise
Emperors and fools draw near
The gambler tips the charioteer
The fortuneteller makes it clear
The moment is upon us

The deal is about to go down
Can you feel the wheel turning
Can you feel the wheel turning

Within the tower a golden room
Where strangers gather, roses bloom
An unexpected chosen few
Are taken to the table
And thirty silver dollars buys
A place where you can stand nearby
And when the deal goes down you try
To buy in if you’re able
And the deal is about to go down

The gambler he sits with his back to the window
Looking familiar and strange
The priestess she stands to his left holding hands
With the star-studded cowboy of spades
Beyond him, a hermit whose heart has been hardened
The queen of hearts is coming her way
Then a fool and his money, easily pardoned
Forgive him for he knows not what to say
And the deal is about to go down

To the gambler’s right, a knight with a sword
Neither devil nor angel to fight
Justice is its own reward
And it’s in his corner tonight
To the right of the knight, the heir apparent empress of the world
Troublesome and barely sixteen
Next to her, the fortuneteller awaits the king of diamonds
She’s terrified of meeting the queen
And the deal is about to go down

Ordinary hands, you don’t know in advance
Just what cards you get to play
The gambler knows, he’s seen it in a dream
He’s in this all the way
Betting all he has, wagers all he will be
Knows nothing but the need to play to win
Some fold and leave the table, others double down
It’s time the showdown begins
Who’s in?

The knight lays his sword at the center of the table
Turns and leaves the tower forever
The cowboy of spades is heading for town
Tells the priestess, glad he met her
The others are all in, thinking they might win
If given a turn for the better
The heir apparent has wagered her crown
The emperor let her

The gambler lays his cards face up
Ace of swords, ace of diamonds, ace of coins, ace of cups
And last, in red and white and gold
A seven-headed joker

No one knew the game had changed
Except for him
Nor how the rules got strange
The dealer grins, the gambler wins
It’s over . . . the game is over

The gambler dreams within a dream
And wakes to see that what it means
To win is less than what it seems
The dealer takes a share
And it’s huge when the deal goes down
His dream of fortune nearly dead
The sword and crown are his instead
Too heavy for his hand and head
Yet his to bear

Hear the seventh angel’s horn
The four winds still before the storm
Three believers cry forlorn
Do you come here often?
Winners win yet still may fail
The wheel of fortune creaks and wails
And now we bet how many nails
It takes to seal a coffin

And the deal is about to go down
Can you feel the wheel turning
Can you feel the wheel turning
